This morning we got up check out of the hotel, and went and had breakfast by the tram station centre.
We bought credit of the man in the phone shop, he told us to dial siven siven siven to set it up (lol).
Got in the car and drove down to ashburton, pretty neat old peoples kind of town, similar to Bathurst. Had a Red bull and a rest in the park before visiting a bird aviary, where we saw peacocks! Vern also saw her first NZ bumble bee, hilarious!

After a hour or so back on the road, we stopped off in Geraldine, even more quaint little town, had pies/pasties at the bakery, and then checked out the museum. Vern patched the telephonioliamatron up the digi.

After Geraldine we drove on to Lake Tekapo.
This place is pretty amazing, the photo won’t ever do it justice…

Spent a good hour soaking up the delicious view and taking photos.

here are a few.

Got to the car rental house, and picked up our prestigious datsun ’sunny’. Same as max’s but white/automatic/shit.
Drove in to town and checked in the the oaks ‘istay’ on cashel street.

Nice room, view of a building, car parked inside.
Wandered down to high street and bought the worlds most expensive sim, and then we got to pay more for credit.
Later on we went for a jaunt down town finding a restaurant called ’sticky fingers’ where we enjoyed some lamb ragout on parpadelle and plenty of fresh off tap cider. The pub was pretty cool, had giant hands made of wood coming out from the walls holding up the lights.

Went to bed fairly early and had a slight panic.

So according to a post on planet5d yesterday, Canon will soon (in participation with apple) be releasing a plugin for final cut systems.

The plugin will allow the final cut pro ‘log and transfer’ utility to open camera cards and import/ingest clips, adding custom meta data etc. For thos of you who have used log and transfer for panasonic p2, or Sony’s XDCAM Ex the interface will be very similar.

With the time it takes my trusty old 4 core mac pro to convert these clips to prores, I should be able to build a better fruit bat.

Apple has not released the download yet, but we are assured it is free.

http://blog.planet5d.com/f0a

Will be available here as soon as its released.

Its funny you know, its pretty much typical of apple to do this, apple are very much a marketing company, they will release a device with minimal features, and a fairly high price, because they believe that people will buy them. Look at ipods, no fm radio, can’t play a huge selection of formats, if you want movies, you’ve got to add them through itunes, etc. the imacs were the same, no serial port (whats that) no floppy disk drive, etc.

Luckily for apple, the tend to create trends in the market because of this, notice how not many pcs don’t have floppy drives now, and all music upon the net is in mp3 or mp4 format.

but i digress…

The ipad unfortunately is running iphone os, which although its won multiple awards for usability, design aesthetics etc, its a phone os. you can’t run more than one thing at once, no file transferring systems no usb host ports etc.

I think apple are making a jump onboard the ‘cloud’ computing model that we haven’t seen in the era of computing modernity. They, in my opinion, may be wanting in the future to have all these features ’sold-on’ to the user via online service. The ipad has no camera, or ability to download images if it did, they want you to upload to the ‘apple photo service’ and get prints form them, rather than doing it at home.

This type of computer system obviously has tons of advantages etc but the cost could be a total monopoly, esp. for these who just shelled out about a grand for the device.

Oh and for ol mate who doesn’t believe that ipad has a keyboard…

So recently I’ve been shooting like a bandit with the 7D and while its nice to not have to pull vision of tape at real time, the h.264 compressed files do take a while to process. Not only are they extremely processor intensive, there doesn’t seem to be a one stop solution for HDSLR post workflow.

I use MPEG streamclip for converting h.264 to prores 422, and then pipe the output in to QtChange which allows you to enter specific timecode from your slate. While it is a ‘workable’ solution, it is certainly not elegant.

Enter Gluetools…

Gluetools apparently are soon releasing a plugin for final cut pro that will add ‘log and transfer’ functionality to HDSLR memory cards, but it is so much more than that, allowing you to view/edit metadata (in a canon video file?) use the date/time stamp as start timecode, and heaps more.

Vincent Laforet has the scoop…

Vincent’s Blog

So, I completed the second Graphic design assignment this morning…

It was a duality piece, called face to face.

The jig was, take two shots of yourself, no assistance. One of yourself, portraying how you think you look to others, and one that is how you think you look like to yourself… Bit of a self absorbed piece, it was pretty fun picking up my prints from the shop this morning let me tell you.

I used some computer assistance, in the form of canon’s EOS utility software, this enabled me to ‘liveveiw’ the camera, and monitor my shot, set my focus from the remote while in pose, set the timer and punch a few shots out.

I was happy with the indoor one, where I am playing guitar, not so happy with the outdoor one, my eyes are a touch out of focus, and It printed too dark. For my major pieces from now, i will make the effort to print at school, on the colour matched monitors.
